Global Warming Commentary (Blog Stage 5)

Imagine the maps of the world we see every day in the classroom. Now imagine these maps being inaccurate due to a sudden rise in sea levels, resulting in countless wars over land, shelter, and resources. This may seem like some sort of dystopian future, but it is reality if we don’t take steps to prevent climate change. This problem becomes harder and harder to solve as time goes on, making it a threat to security, resources, and happiness. Now, it rests upon our shoulders to mitigate the progression of climate change, because adaption will only take us so far. A successful push for governmental regulation on carbon emission and day to day steps to limit one’s carbon footprint will go a long way in securing the world’s future.

According to Science Advances, a  multidisciplinary open-access scientific journal, the globe's average temperature could raise “between 4.78C to 7.36C by 2100, based on one set of calculations”. Those that see this statistic dismiss it as something easy to adapt to, when in reality, it is not. This temperature increase will lead to unpredictable weather patterns and an unprecedented amount of melting in the ice caps, among many other things. Additionally, the loss of polar sea ice will only accelerate climate change into a feedback loop: The melting of permafrost also causes the “release of the greenhouse gases carbon dioxide and methane”

Currently, the US National Government is not taking the proper steps to prevent a climate related disaster, especially under President Donald Trump. Donald Trump, an avid denier of man made climate change believes that "The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive." The president has been taking several steps to combat previously established regulations on climate change causing emissions. First, he has withdrawn America from the Paris Climate Accord, an accord made to regulate each countries emissions to curb the effects of climate change. The only other countries not in this agreement are Syria and Nicaragua, and Nicaragua isn't in it because the country believes that it isn't strict enough. While an extreme majority of countries and scientists believe in the concerning effects of climate change, current US government is ignoring these effects and possibly dooming us to a hotter planet.

 In conclusion, the American population must take action in their community and against the government in regards to climate change in order to secure a safer future for the planet, because the government is not. A concerned citizen can call the local or state office voicing their concerns or be active in the community by researching clean energy and regulation promoting local officials to vote into office.

    On July 25th, 2017 US Government-Studying the System posted an article called "Global Warming Commentary" where the author states that American citizens must work to improve the environment, because the government is not currently doing anything about the major issue known as Global Warming. I completely agree that Global Warming is alarming and that we must take action to save our world. The author uses great use of evidence and statistics to back his claim, and does an excellent job of conveying just how significant Global Warming is. He goes into detail about how the government (and more importantly) Trump are being ignorant to what is happening to our environment. He states how Trump is an "avid denier of man made climate change" and how Trump claims Global Warming to be a hoax. This shows how, said plainly, stupid our government is being when it comes to our surroundings and is all the more reason why we should be doing our best as inhabitants of this country to keep the environment clean and safe for many generations to come.

    I am blown away by the thoughtful, articulate insight that Alex provides in his commentary. I found his writing to be excellent in quality and quantity. While I may still be in high school, I have a better understanding of what a college student should strive to achieve.

    I agree that global warming is a major issue that many (including the government) are overlooking. If global warming is left unchecked, the entire world could change dramatiaclly like Alex pointed out. Alex does a fantastic job of showing how absurd the US is by pulling out of the Paris climate accord when there are currently only two countries are not in it with one (Nicaragua) believing it to be too lenient.

    Ending his commentary with a call to action is a great way to make the reader remember the article. It gives them a cause that they can quickly join and a clear path to help that cause. Many believe in climate change, and this action helps them work towards their beliefs. More importantly, it makes a persuasive argument to the uniformed and those in denial that we all must work to help lessen the impact of climate change.

I find the insight Leon has provided on the recent issues and scandals in the government as very true. Both the attempts to repeal Obamacare and President Trump's tweets against transgenders in the military show controversial actions further polarizing the Democratic and Republican parties. I also agree with his point that we will be stuck in political deadlock for the next four years. Even right now with a Republican majority congress and Republican president, many legislative actions have still been stopped in their tracks. For example, Leon even provided the instance of the failure to repeal Obamacare's bill. It is also likely that in the 2018 midterms, a Democratic majority congress may occur, causing even more deadlock with the political divide between the president and congress.

       Net neutrality is  the principle that Internet service providers should enable access to all content and applications regardless of the source, and without favoring or blocking particular products or websites. As of right now, the principle is at high risk, as FCC chairman Ajit Pai has pushed for net neutrality to be destroyed. Without net neutrality, corporations will be able to slow down their services and charge fees for accessing certain websites, like YouTube or even Google. There could be data caps for at-home wifi, much like the data caps seen in cell phone data plans. Our ISPs will be able to control what we access and view online without net neutrality. Trump travel ban: Judge expands definition of 'close relative' In response to President Trumps reinstated travel ban on refugees from 6 Muslim majority countries, Derrick Watson, a judge from Hawaii, has ruled against one of its components. President Trump's restriction allowed for close family members from these countries to visit their relatives in the United States. However, his definition of "close family members" did not include grandparents, grandchildren, uncles, aunts, etc. Watson ruled that this interpretation was too narrow, and ordered that these restrictions shouldn't be enforced, calling the rule "unduly restrictive." This ruling is a bold legal blow against his often criticized immigration crackdown.
