Commentary #2: The Unbelievable Hypocrisy Of Free Speech Conservatives
The Unbelievable Hypocrisy Of Free Speech Conservatives
Points out how Republican "free speech crusaders" did nothing when trump tightened restrictive laws on the media and EPA
Points out Rod Dreher's hypocrisy vs SJW and trump
Quotes how Jared Kushner wanted CNN reporters fired to prove trumps bad relation to media
Pointed out that Conservatives are trying to pass voter ID suppression laws
Conclude: Trump and his supporters are accelerating towards an unjust suppressed society while focusing on other issues.
In his blog post "The Unbelievable Hypocrisy of Free Speech Conservatives," Jim Sleeper accuses Trump supporters along with the Republican party of hypocrisy regarding their attitudes on free speech. Sleeper is primarily addressing a liberal audience, one where he can address the flaws in their politically correct culture while unveiling the injustice of the Republican party. He calls this hypocrisy part of a symptom of a sickness that "elevated a failed casino financier and relentless self-promoter to the White House." I believe that Sleeper is very credible on this topic, as he has lectured undergraduate students at Yale in political science for 17 years and has even written a book against the political correctness of the Democratic party called "Liberal Racism," showing that he is informed of the flaws of both sides of the Democratic and Republican spectrum.
Sleeper then continues to use many incidents and people to point out how hypocritical these so called "free speech crusaders" are. For example, he points out that the Republican party free speech crusaders focus their anger towards "politically correct college students" while ignoring Trumps "threats against open expression." I agree that this is a prime example of their hypocrisy; they are trying to shut down a group that wants to suppress offensive speech while not caring that the president of the United States is suppressing freedom of the press. Sleeper even agrees with the Republicans that these politically correct groups sometimes are at fault, but the magnitude of the lies that Trump is pushing forwards are much more severe.
Sleeper then proves that Trump is in fact taking action against freedom of expression, citing a report detailing over 70 instances of Trump's administration smearing journalists and denying their access. Reportedly, he even barred the EPA from providing data on climate change. These are all extremely concerning violations of free speech and expression, all of which are ignored or excused by these "free speech crusaders."
Sleeper continues to provide even more of these instances of hypocrisy, from Jared Kushner asking why certain CNN reporters weren't fired for slandering the administration, to "free speech crusaders" advocating for voter ID laws, to even Rod Dreher launching hate at politically correct groups, calling them 'social justice warriors,' while excusing Steve Bannon for telling the media to 'keep it's mouth shut and listen for a while'. These instances are solid evidence to back up Sleeper's claims and only further incline me to agree with him on the ideological hypocrisy of Republicans on free speech.
